Dr. Alina Potemska is an illustrator, game artist, and game designer whose research focuses on effective methods of training cognitive functions through games.
Her doctoral research on cognition in games is based on a case study of Exodus: a board game, which she designed. Her research explores the history of game development, game studies and methods for integrating narrative art into learning thought games.
She has extensive experience working with public sector organisations, including NGOs, museums, and educational projects in the UK and internationally. Alina provides efficient solutions for communicating narratives through visual arts and games, with a particular focus on using games and gamification to support wellbeing, learning, and social change.
In her role as an educator, Alina has spent over a decade as both a lecturer and workshop leader for various artistic projects and art residencies. She has contributed to multiple educational game projects such as PlatzCart and MemoPara in collaboration with GFPS e.V.
Alina is actively engaged in the creative and gaming communities, regularly exhibiting her artworks in both solo and group exhibitions. As an illustrator, she has contributed to children's books and designed posters for movies and film festivals. Additionally, she's a frequent guest at gaming events, fairs, conferences, and hosts gaming nights.
She has presented and written extensively on the relationship between games, illustration, and the evolution of gaming, exploring how gaming has integrated into our daily lives using games as a tool for both education and artistic expression.
