Dorothy spent most of her professional career in the design industry, working at the interface between brands, innovation and sustainability. She co-founded the London operations of Dragon Rouge, a global creative agency working with organisations from multinational companies to charities, small start-ups to professional bodies.
After a childhood in Scotland and an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from Oxford, she started her career in advertising, moving into the fast-growing design world in the '80s. She was actively involved in the development of the design industry, sitting on the boards of the Design Business Association and the Design Council. She has sat on a number of public bodies, including the Government Advisory Committee on Business and the Environment, the National Advisory Group on Eco-Labelling, and Business in the Environment (part of Business in the Community). She was a member of the board of Green Alliance, including Chair from 2005 – 2010. She is currently a board member of Carbon Trust. She has also participated in several RSA committees.
Dorothy has written or contributed to a number of books on design, sustainability and brands including Green Design, Business is Beautiful, Longer Lasting Products and The Handbook of Design for Sustainability, reflecting her commitment to the essential role that creative skills must play in the transformation to a sustainable economy and way of living.
Dorothy lives in Cowes, Isle of Wight and in London.
