Martin is a photographer, filmmaker, motion graphics designer, artist and lecturer. He is a passionate believer in the use of the still and moving image as a tool for promoting change.
He was born in Scotland, growing up in and around the city of Glasgow. He was introduced to visual media when he studied photography at the Glasgow College of Building and Printing and has evolved his practice over the last 20 years. He sees the role of the photographer and filmmaker as one of great privilege, in which he is allowed into people’s lives to record them and their environment. With this privilege comes the great responsibility to maintain the integrity of both photographer and subject.
In 2007 he travelled to Malawi where, as part of a team, he worked on an AIDS/HIV education film ‘Bantu Ngati Isi’. It is the first film to use Tumbuka as it’s sole language and is currently touring northern Malawi encouraging people to be tested for HIV, challenging stigma and introducing them to ARV treatments.
In 2009 he was commissioned to travel to the Pearl River Delta and make portraits of workers in the shoe factories of Shenzhen Longgang, the resultant work being exhibited in both Glasgow and Hong Kong.
In his role as Senior Lecturer in Photography at the Arts University Bournemouth he passes on his skills to the next generation of image-makers and is fully involved in the contemporary issues that affect the media world at technical and conceptual levels. He is an expert in the use of the Adobe Creative Suite lecturing in Photoshop, Premiere and After Effects.
Over the past few years he has developed his personal practice, receiving a distinction from the MA course at Arts University College at Bournemouth. His work has been shown at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Glasgow, Document International Human Rights Film Festival and at The Royal West of England Academy.
I have taught digital media for the last 15 years as a visiting lecturer at Arts University Bournemouth and Winchester University. For the past eight years, I have been a senior lecturer on the BA (Hons) Commercial Photography course. In this role, I lead two level four units; one specialising in digital photography workflow, the other in digital video workflow.
I am new media artist specialising in projection and graphic coding interfaces. I am regularly commisioned to produce large scale interactive installation. I am a also a voluntry tutor in digital technology at Vita Nova - an arts organisation providing opportunities for people in recovery and with mental health challenges. In this role I facitiate art as a threraputic pratice and tool for improving self esteem.
