I am Senior Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Animation Production course within Bournemouth Film School at AUB. I teach BA (Hons) Animation Production students across all three years, focusing on areas such as animation history and aesthetics, visual storytelling, and broader contextual studies. I also convene the Investigative Study (dissertation) unit in the third year.
My teaching in the first and second year focuses on animation aesthetics, visual storytelling, genre, animation history, and broader contextual issues relating to the moving image. At Level 6, I run the Investigative Study unit and supervise students through the completion of their dissertations.
Prior to joining Arts University Bournemouth, I taught at University of Southampton for several years, working on units relating to film, cultural studies, and research skills and study skills.
My PhD, titled Interactions Between Contemporary American Independent Cinema and Popular Music Culture, examined how American indie films engage with alternative music subcultures and utilise distinctive pop soundtracks in order to consolidate their sense of 'indieness'.
My current research is focused on crossovers between live action cinema and animation, and on the prevalence of digital visual effects in contemporary media. I have presented papers on the uses of imperceptible visual effects in US indie cinema, the use of animated effects and digital imaging in live music concerts, and CG augmentations of screen performance. My pedagogical research is concerned with how students can best engage with theory, and how the theorisation of visual effects fits within the wider fields of Film Studies and Animation Studies.
