Sadie Aston is a practising artist alongside her role as a specialist Painting Technician Demonstrator at Arts University Bournemouth. She graduated from AUB's MA Painting course in 2022, after also completing her BA in Fine Art (2021).
Sadie delves into the enigmatic threshold that divides realms of existence – life and death, the bygone and the imminent, the tangible and the ethereal. Her artistic inquiry navigates the essence of being ensconced within a corporeal form, engaging with the universe that envelops us. This exploration is not just visual; it is a profound, emotionally and psychologically laden journey that scrutinises our introspective selves, our interactions with others, and the dance of our physical forms in isolation or communion. The figures within her works seem to emerge from a mystical void, defined by the fluid motion of oil paints cascading across the canvas. These figures, captured in moments of subtle interaction – a glance, or the gentle contour of a shoulder illuminated – are rendered with an intimacy that suggests a connection transcending the physical realm.
Her professional painting practice has led her to participate in several creative opportunities. During her MA, Sadie began planning and curating exhibition events in Bournemouth locally, and has since began showing in galleries around the UK including London, Halifax, Lethworth and Milton Keynes.
Sadie now works at AUB as a Technician Demonstrator for BA (Hons) Fine Art, MA Painting and MA Fine Art, specialising in Painting. Sadie offers expert technical assistance to students, sharing her extensive knowledge on various topics including canvas creation, surface preparation, grounds, mediums, paints, tools, and diverse methods for displaying paintings through one-to-one learning and by demonstrating these techniques through group workshops. Students can reach out to Sadie via email or speak with her directly to receive technical advice, assistance in sourcing materials, and personalised support. She also offers one-on-one guidance through technical inductions, ensuring each student receives the help they need.
