Wayne has worked in the theatre and film industry for over twenty years as a costume cutter and interpreter. During this time, he has worked in most aspects of theatre from dance, opera and three-weekly rep through to pantomime and musical theatre. After a decade of honing his skills in the theatre, there was a natural progression into film, working for such luminaries as Jane Law, Sandy Powell and Alexandra Byrne. Film credits have included Shakespeare in Love, Gladiator, Tomorrow Never Dies and Phantom of the Opera.
Since joining Arts University Bournemouth in 2014 emphasis has been on historical cut and body sculpting through intricate cut and boning technique. Other areas of development include surface embellishment and historical decorative integration.
Further engagement includes the AUB Summer Schools, where international students have over a three-week period the opportunity to research, cut and construct a historically accurate costume from a chosen timeline in history.
Forthcoming projects include the development of an onsite costume archive as a resource to both student and lecturer to enrich their understanding of and the complexities in recreating historical and theatrical dress.
Wayne currently teaches on the BA (Hons) Costume course, and advises on both the BA (Hons) Performance Design for Film Costume and MA Historical Costume courses.
He has previously taught for eight years on BA (Hons) Costume for Stage and Screen at the Grimsby Institute, as well as Northern College of Costume in York.
